ECS Account Management Tools

STOP. Please note that...

The mail tools on this page -- status, vacation, forward, forward and autoreply -- work only if you read your mail on the Engineering mail server. If your mail account was created after August 2010, your mail server is the Hawkmail/Outlook/Exchange server at ITS; these tools will not work. If your email routing address is iowa.uiowa.edu (look in the University Phonebook), you cannot use these tools.

Use these web-based programs to make changes or look at your Engineering account.

When you use these tools, your browser will use SSL to securely connect to the server. Our server uses the Engineering SSL certificate. If your browser gives you warnings about using an unrecognized security certificate, verify that you have connected to imap.engineering.uiowa.edu

* mail status - Show status of mail account: quota, forwarding or vacation on.
* password - Change your password. Your Engineering account password is the same as your email password, so changing one changes the other.
* vacation - For Engineering email accounts only. Turn on and off the vacation autoreply program.
* forward email - Turn on and off email forwarding.
* leaving: forward and autoreply - Leaving the Engineering College, so turn email forwarding on and send an autoreply to senders.

Mail Status

Find out your mail quota and space used, and if the forwarding or vacation options are set on.

Your Engineering mail account has limited space in which to store your mail messages. This is your mail quota. If you run out of mail storage space, delete messages you no longer want or move items to your home directory. (If you want the account quota for your Engineering account, from a Windows computer run Start | All Programs | COE Tools | Disk Quota.) For help, see the consultants in 1253 SC or call 335-5055.

Change Your Password

ECS has a password changing tool to change and reset your password you should use if you are logged in remotely. Go to the password tool page. To reset your password or unlock your account, you must enroll in the Password Reset System. Call or come to the consulting office, 1253 SC, 335-5055, for help with passwords. If you are logged in on a college-administered Windows computers, change your password by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and selecting Change Password.

For a discussion on why you should change your password regularly and how to select an appropriate password, read about passwords.

Your email password is the same as your Engineering account password.

Vacation (Autoreply)

STOP. This tool is for Engineering email accounts only.

When you are away from your email for more than a few days, you may want to let your electronic correspondents know that you are gone. The vacation program, also called auto-reply, automatically returns a message to everyone that sends email to you. Each sender receives your vacation message only once per week, even if the sender sends you multiple messages. The email you receive while the vacation program is in effect is saved in your mail account.

Turn the vacation program on before you leave. When you come back, don't forget to turn vacation off.

Forward Email

You can forward all email received by your Engineering account so that you read your email from some other server. If you will be away from campus for an extended time (during a co-op, internship, etc.) and will be reading mail from another place, use this utility. Of, if you have an Engineering mail account but want to read your mail from another account, turn mail forwarding on so that you don't miss important email sent to your Engineering account.

Once you have turned forwarding on, new email will be forwarded from the Engineering mail server to another mail server. To verify that you are receiving mail where you forwarded it to, have a friend send email to your Engineering account. Check to make sure the mail arrived at the destination you forwarded mail to.

Leaving: Forward Email with Autoreply

When you leave the Engineering College (graduate, leave school, leave university employment, transfer to another college), your Engineering computer account will be active briefly. (See the Quick Start Guide for information on how long Engineering accounts are active.) Set this option to have all email received by your Engineering account forwarded to another email account where you read mail and notify the sender that your email address has changed. This option, then, does two separate things: 1) it forwards incoming mail, and 2) it sends a reply to the sender saying what email address should be used in the future.

Once you have turned this option on, new email will be forwarded from the Engineering mail server to another mail server as long as your Engineering account is active. To verify that you are receiving mail where you forwarded it to and that the sender receives mail saying that the Engineering address should not be used, have a friend send email to your Engineering account. Check to make sure the mail arrived at the destination you forwarded mail to. And ask the friend to verify that s/he received via email the address change information.
